Axtell Reunion 2006 Secretary’s report

The 105th Axtell reunion was held on August 19, 2006 at the Fireman's Park in Deposit, New York. Twenty nine Axtell family members and friends were in attendance . After a delicious chicken pot pie dinner, the business meeting ensued.

The following were remembered with a moment of silence:

Louise Jones Axtell
Elizabeth Ella Axtell Stearns
Patricia Taite Walling(Lucy's daughter)
Bernice Clark Axtell

Elwin VanValkenburgh stated that a chair was found at Dr. Axtell's house (Ruth Axtell's) that belonged to Henry S. Axtell.

It was mentioned that Eleanor Stoddard wants a Axtell genealogy book.

Tom Axtell mentioned some old newspaper articles pertaining to the Axtells. Silas Axtell's newsletter was among them.

Chris Axtell read several excerpts from the travels of Warren and Ann Axtell who are currently hiking the Appalachian Trail. They have finished 1,400 miles of the trail to date, and are currently in the state of Maine.
Some asked if anyone had a copy of the book called Daniel Axtell The Renegade (Regicide?). No one seemed to know about it.

It was stated that the June 28th flood drove Smitty Axtell out of business. His business and home were severely damaged in the flood, and much financial loss. Much of the town suffered considerable damage, many losing their homes and possessions. Thankfully, there was no loss of life in our town.

Tom Axtell reported that we currently have $ 440.27 in the treasury. Some funds were withdrawn for today's reunion supplies. Charles Axtell motioned to accept the treasurer's report as given, seconded by Joe Axtell.

Tom also said that in order to reserve the Fireman's Park for next year , we may have to have insurance to use it, or sign an indemnity. He will check into it.

It was mentioned that the farm that Moses Axtell was buried on is currently owned by Eldredge Axtell.

Dan Axtell encouraged everyone to write to the Town Board and complain about the removal of the stone wall around the Axtell cemetery on China Road. This is on Stewart Varney's farm. He said we need to write letters to the town and ask them to force Mr Varney to replace the stone wall around the cemetery so that we can keep our Axtell history in tact. The address is Town of Deposit, Cheryl Curtis, Town Clerk, 333 St. Hwy. 10, Deposit, New York 13754.

It was also asked if any one knows where the son of Moses Axtell is buried that is the Patriot's son??? (Not sure on this) His name was also Moses.

It was suggested that Warren Axtell check with the webmaster to see if we can put the notes from the reunion on the website in the future. The Axtell website has not been updated in some time.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:10 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,
Christel Axtell (sitting in for the hiking secretary, Warren Axtell)

Axtell Reunion 2001 Secretary’s report

The 100th Axtell Reunion, held since 1901, was held at the Fireman’s Park, Deposit, NY August 18, 2001. Forty two Axtell family members and friends gathered at the park enjoying a warm, humid overcast afternoon. Reunion President Daniel B. Axtell opened the gathering, greeting everyone. Joe Axtell offered grace before dinner. Following the traditional chicken pie dinner the business meeting was called to order. Everyone introduced himself or herself giving their connection to the Axtell family. A new addition this year was Isabella Oakerson, granddaughter of Elizabeth Axtell Oakerson. Mark Schmidt sent word that his daughter Ingrid was married in July to Brian Davis and that there were many Axtells at the wedding. There was a moment of silence in remembrance of Mabel Barney Axtell (widow of Jay Axtell) and John Dewey Axtell, who passed away since the last reunion. Our condolences are offered to their families. They were treasured members of our group, especially Jay and Mabel who faithfully traveled from Arizona to attend our reunions every year.

Marilyn Cheney talked about a documentary on the Boston Tea Party she had seen, which listed Moses Axtell as the first name of the colonists who participated in the event.

Since the previous reunion Clayton M. Axtell Jr. has obtained reprints of the Axtell Genealogy and the Axtell Supplement, in paper back, at significant personal investment. The reprints were available for sale. (Axtell Gen. $15, Axtell Supplement $10) We are grateful to Clayton for his efforts.

The Axtell Genealogies may be ordered, by mail, from Clayton M. Axtell.

Clayton, also, offered refunds to anyone who had paid for but not received shirts at the last reunion.

Jim Benedict suggested donating Axtell Genealogies to the Broome Co. Library. The members voted to purchase Axtell Genealogies from the treasury to donate to both the Broome Co. library and the Deposit Free Library.

Pres. Dan Axtell gave a short discourse acknowledging our ancestors’ place in the history of our country’s formation. Moses Axtell, ancestor of most of us, was a minuteman the Revolution. Thomas Axtell, our immigrant ancestor, was one of the early colonists.

Tom Axtell (of Deposit) gave the Treasurer’s report, and Warren Axtell (of New London CT) gave the Secretary’s Report.

Warren Axtell requested help with address updates since many notices were returned undeliverable and also many addresses will be changed due to 911 requirements.

Tom Axtell was appointed to secure the Deposit Fireman’s Park for Axtell Reunion 2002, on the 3rd Saturday of August next year. (Note: The 2002 reunion will be August 17)

An effort to publish a new Axtell Genealogy is in progress. Updates should be sent to Warren Axtell, 504 Montauk Ave, New London, CT 06320, or emailed to axtellw@cs.com.

Descendants of Lloyd A. Axtell (8-633), born 1881, held a reunion in Rhinelander, Wisconsin during June, 2000.  Here's the report, thanks to sisters Lora May Axtell Hawley and Rosemary Axtell Roehl:

Fred & Lora Hawley and Rosemary & Reuben Roehl celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversaries (1950-2000) this summer. It was also the first ever reunion for the four surviving Axtells, children of Lloyd A. (8-633) and their families. In attendance were: Jean Axtell Jaekel (9-773) with her daughters Rebecca, and Kathryn Matecki (Thomas) and their 2 children; LoraMay Axtell Hawley (Fred) (9-775) with their daughters Joan Cox (James) and their 2 children and Lynn Bootes (Donald) and their adopted son; Robert Axtell (9-776); Rosemary Axtell Roehl (Reuben) (9-777) with their son, Robert (Pam) and one daughter; and daughters Linda Lotito (James) with their adopted son, Carolyn Melby (Derek) and 2 daughters, Julie Coffin (Frank) and their 3 daughters. Also attending was our first cousin Ruth Jensen Harris (Daughter of Edith Axtell 8-632). All 32 of us came from Calif., Ore., Wash., Minn., Wis., Ohio, No. Car., Georgia, and Virginia and gathered at a resort near Rhinelander, Wis. for a week.

On Sunday we got acquainted (some for the first time) at a banquet. We celebrated the lives of our two Seniors, 80 years young Jean and Ruth. The 12 children in the group ranged in age from 2 to 16. For the rest of the week we fished, we swam, we talked, we ran and tumbled in the meadow grass, watched little ones swing, slide and teeter, went on a hayride and talked. We took a boat cruise of the lake, we water skied, hiked and talked and laughed, played tennis, volley ball, Monopoly, shuffle board, shot basketballs and pool, ate and talked and ate. We even had our own fireworks, bonfire and Smores one night.

And when we said good-bye we took away priceless memories and promised to do this again some year.

Iowa / Wisconsin / Illinois Reunion

Ron Axtell writes (31 Dec 1997):

Hi! My name is Ron Axtell and I am part of the Axtell clan in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois. My uncle, Silas Axtell, and father, Raymond Axtell, were talking about all of the neat stuff about "Axtell's" on the internet while we enjoyed our traditional oyster stew on Christmas Eve (An Axtell tradition in these parts). We have held an Axtell Reunion in Lancaster, Wisconsin, the past two years, and have scheduled the next reunion for August, 1998. Coincidently, it is being held on the same day as the 90th Annual Axtell Reunion on the East Coast*. Anyway, just thought that I would let you know that there are Axtell's in the Midwest. Nice talking to you and Happy New Year!

[*Note: The East Coast (NY) reunion was moved one week later that year]

Nebraska Reunion

Descendants of John T. Axtell (a missing link) have a reunion every year in Nebraska, including one year with 117 people in Axtell, Nebraska.  On Labor Day 1998, they had their reunion in Washington State.  John T. Axtell was b. 1869.  Some of his descendants are confident his father was Edgar [8-43] Axtell, although the 1962 Supplement speculates that he may have been the son of Ezekiel [8-475].

Other Reunions

There was an Axtell/Hutton reunion in California in 1994, but I don't know if that has become annual.
